E. Texas authorities identify cross-dressing thief
Gene Autry Williams, Jr. robbing Kilgore liquor store
KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -
A cross-dresser's borrowed fashion statement ended up getting him busted for robbing an East Texas liquor store.
According to Detective Roman Roberson of the Kilgore Police Department, family members of 42-year-old Gene Autry Williams, Jr. recognized him on surveillance footage of the robbery shared on Facebook and YouTube. The dress and wig worn by Williams during the robbery were borrowed from a member of his family.
Williams, wearing a formal green dress, bobbed wig and sunglasses, robbed the Rose Package Store in Kilgore on August 4, 2012. Authorities say he entered the store, laid money on the store counter, and pulled out a gun and a pair of handcuffs. Pointing the gun at the store's owner, he then forced the owner to handcuff himself, allowing Williams to make off with an unknown amount of money.
Kilgore police shared footage of the robbery on multiple social media outlets hoping someone would recognize the cross-dressing suspect. Over one year later, authorities now have enough evidence to charge Williams with the crime.
Williams is currently being held in the Sabine Parish Jail on one charge of vehicle theft. He refused to talk to police about the August 2012 incident but did provide a DNA sample.
