BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -
The cause of the partial paralysis suffered by a Bossier City toddler following a spanking by a caregiver has still not been confirmed, but at least one doctor who has examined the child says it's possible that it wasn't caused by abuse at all.
2-year-old Miley Ray Sharp is now recovering at Children's Hospital in New Orleans, two months after she was brought LSU Hospital with bruises that led her family to believe she had been injured by someone who was supposed to be taking care of her.
The little girl's family still believes it was a spanking Miley received from a family friend for soiling her pants that caused the injuries, but they have consulted with three different doctors in search of definitive answers. "Two doctors say its trauma, one doctor says no, that it's a viral infection," said grandmother Judy McDonald, who adds she doesn't think it is just a virus, pointing to pictures and surveillance video taken of the child just before the incident.
The video shows Miley running full speed, just the day before she couldn't move at all. KSLA News 12 asked a doctor at LSU Medical Center if any child could be that active one day and paralyzed the next by a viral infection. Neurologist Dr. Stephen Jaffe says it's possible, with a neurological condition called "transverse myelitis" that swells the spinal cord.
McDonald says her granddaughter has recently been moved from the ICU to a regular room. "MRIs, CAT scans, you name and she's had it," her grandmother says. "Blood tests, she's had it. She's been through Hell and back." The little girl is getting better, though.
For now, her family remains convinced Miley's condition was caused by trauma. McDonald says she has text messages to prove it and claims because Miley had a bruise on her nose and on her spinal cord. They believe the "spanking" gave her whiplash and damaged her spine. "I'm beyond mad, I want the person held accountable," said McDonald.
Bossier City Police say they are still investigating, and no arrests have been made. But they say that investigation is expected to wrap up within the next few days.
Meanwhile, two fundraisers have been planned for Miley. The first is a car wash on September 14th at Barksdale Federal Credit Union on East 70th from 8 a.m. to noon.
The second fundraiser is at Buffalo Wild Wings in Shreveport all day September 18th. Just remind your waiter you're there for the fundraiser.
