SONORA, KY (WAVE) - A car crushed a couple working on their vehicle in a backyard. A family member found the two dead, but it's how they discovered the man and woman that is providing some comfort in this time of tragedy.
"It was a very surreal scene to actually find a couple holding hands," said LaRue County Sheriff Merle Edlin.
John Muir, 56, and Chong Muir, 71, passed away grasping each other's hands after a vehicle gave away and fell on the couple.
"At first, it appears the vehicle fell on him. Then, we believe the mother tried to get the vehicle off him with a jack. At some point, the car slipped and pinned both of them," Edlin said. "They were just trying to help their son out."
Their son discovered his parents were killed when he returned to the Munfordville Road house outside of Sonora. While their son was out, John Muir decided to check his son's brakes and change the oil. Neighbor Jim Hardesty saw Muir doing just that Tuesday morning.
"He was working on the car," said Hardesty. "When I came back about 2 o'clock I didn't see anything out of the ordinary."
Hardesty said the Muirs were always active - often checking their chickens' eggs, working in their garden or helping a neighbor.
"They were very hard-working," said hardest. "She was an absolute jewel. They went together, I guess. Maybe that's the way the good Lord wanted them to go."
Edlin said the accident may have been avoided if the vehicle had been supported on a solid surface, like cement, instead of the soft ground.
