WILLS POINT, TX (KLTV) -

Police arrested an East Texas man after he barricaded himself in a gas station bathroom, and reportedly tried to start a fire.

On Sunday night, Wills Point Police were called to Mitchell Oil on South Commerce Street, where the suspect had reportedly fled into the attic.

"He called 911 on his own and then when the police showed up, he wouldn't come out and then it turned into a little standoff," said Harold Mitchell, owner of Mitchell Oil.

Mitchell said the man barricaded himself in the bathroom before calling police, claiming someone was after him.

"He didn't want to talk to anyone but police and then he didn't believe them when they showed him their badges under the door and he still didn't believe it," said Mitchell.

Police say the suspect then started vandalizing the restroom

"He was out of his mind and he ripped the door off of the cabinet and it was broken in half. Then he tore the plumbing out from under the sink," said Kim Danvers, secretary for Mitchell Oil. "They were spraying pepper spray in the bathroom and Then he tried to escape through the attic."

The man went through a light fixture in the bathroom to get to the attic.

He ran through out the store's attic, managing not to fall through. Then authorities say he tried to set a fire.

"He tried to set some Christmas decorations on fire with a lighter that he had. Luckily that didn't work for him," said Mitchell.

Police tracked the man by his footsteps through the ceiling, before making a move.

"They used [a] stocking shelf as a ladder. A Wills Point policeman and a highway patrolman climbed up it and they said when they got up there with a flashlight, 'Oh I see him. He's right here,'" said Mitchell.

The cat and mouse game ended with an arrest, and the store owner tried to look on the bright side of things.

"It's not everyday where you have a guy barricading himself in your bathroom with the police out trying to talk him out," said Mitchell.

Right now, authorities are not releasing the suspect's name, but say he is facing several charges, including arson and assault on a public servant.
