East Texas man takes on six pound hot dog

Posted: Updated:

He may have had the day off from work, but one East Texan had a very large task on his plate. On Monday, in Gresham, one man pitted himself against a six pound hot dog, with less than thirty minutes to finish it off.

The dog was topped with cheese, chili, two types of pickles, tomatoes, relish, onions, and Fritos – estimated at more than four thousand calories.

"I eat a lot anyway, and so, the only thing I didn't do, I haven't eaten today. I drank a lot of water and stuff like that this morning. But, just not eating today," said Raymond Graham about preparing for the challenge.

With cheering fans and family crowded outside The Stand, a hot dog restaurant in Gresham, he shoveled bite after bite of dog into his mouth. The reigning champion, known as "King Richard," was on his mind.

A standard hot dog from The Stand is about half a pound, so the one Raymond ate was over ten times that size.

Four minutes in, things were looking good for Graham.

"I'm pretty sure I can finish the hot dog, just the time is what's going to be the determining factor," he said.

His family cheered him on as he shook his head, visibly struggling. But, as the clock ticked closer and closer to King Richard's time of 23:42, it just wasn't meant to be.

"I think the bread got to him," Barbara Graham, his wife, said.

He didn't win, but he did finish the hot dog and chips and later had some ice cream to wash it all down.

"It's just a challenge. I actually, my wife and I are starting a diet tomorrow and so I'm going to go out with a bang," he said.

If the winner does finish in under 25 minutes, the six pound hot dog is on the house, but today, it took Graham more than thirty.

The Stand plans on making contests like this a regular event.
