HOOKS, TX (KSLA) -
A candlelight vigil was held Sunday evening in Hooks, Texas for the victim in a deadly domestic violence case.
Dozens of people from the East Texas town came out to remember the victim, Whitney Nicole Hanes.
Officers with the Hooks Police Department were called to a home in the 200 block of Grant street around 11:53 p.m. Saturday night.
After arriving on the scene, the officer encountered both the suspect and Hanes outside of a friend's home. Hanes, 21, was lying on the ground not moving, investigators said. "It was blunt force trauma and an edge weapon is what it looks like so far. Of course the investigation is still going on as to the actual cause of the death and the trauma", said Chief R. Keith Schutte, Hooks Police Department. The couple did have children together but the chief did not elaborate as to how many.
The suspect, Justin Donell Wright, 21, was arrested at the scene. He was transported to the Bi-State Justice Center in Texarkana, Texas and charged with murder.
Investigators are trying to piece together exactly what happened leading up to Hanes' death.
Hanes' body was sent to the Southwest Forensic Institute in Dallas for autopsy.
Donations for the victim's three children are being accepted by a friend of the family. The two boys wear sizes 5T and 3T respectively. The little girl wears at 3T-4T in clothes. She also is in need of size 4 diapers.
