Police: Ex-Covington finance director attempts suicide

INDEPENDENCE, KY (FOX19) -

Police say former Covington Finance Director Bob Due was taken to the hospital Thursday after trying to take his own life.

Due, 63, has been accused of misappropriation of city funds, which could be in excess of $300,000, according to City Manager Larry Klein.

Covington City Commissioners voted unanimously to fire Due, 63, on Tuesday following his arrest.

Klein announced details of the investigation last week, saying money was allegedly transferred from the City of Covington into Due's bank account dating back to 2010. He said there were multiple incidents of about $8,000-$10,000 per transaction.

According to Independence Police, emergency crews were dispatched to his home Thursday afternoon on a report of a suicide attempt.

He was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood. His condition has not been released.

Due has been charged with theft by unlawful taking of over $10,000, unlawful access to a computer, official misconduct and criminal possession of forged instruments.

Due could face up to 20 years in prison.

He posted a $10,000 bond and was released on house arrest until his next court appearance September 3.

Due has been with the city since 1999.
