Reality Check: Kentucky 2014 Midterm Election

(FOX19) -

In a national survey of registered voters conducted in 2012, eight in ten people said they were frustrated by the tone of political campaigns. More than half said candidates were downright disrespectful to one another.

Kentucky's 2014 midterm election is well underway, and so far the tone is anything but respectful between Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.

The political sparring began in earnest this summer at the 133rd Annual Fancy Farm Picnic. McConnell attacked grimes and dragged her father into it.

"How nice it is to see Jerry Lundergan back in the game like the loyal Democrat he is. He's taking orders from the Obama campaign on how to run his daughter's campaign. They told him to make a pitch on the Internet for the women's vote, and he sent a check to Anthony Weiner," said McConnell.

Grimes used her turn at the podium to lampoon McConnell's voting record.

"Let's just tell it like it is. If the doctors told Senator McConnell that he had a kidney stone, he'd refuse to pass it," said Grimes.

Before McConnell can focus squarely on Grimes, he has to defeat Tea Party candidate and Louisville businessman Matt Bevin in the Republican primary. In a recent TV commercial, the McConnell campaign challenges Bevin's LinkedIn resume.

"Bevin never attended MIT, and MIT has no record of Bevin. Bailout Bevin, not a Kentucky conservative," said McConnell.

Bevin's camp calls the ad, "a pack of lies." The candidate says that when it comes to campaigning, McConnell likes it dirty.

"Mitch McConnell is known as 'Mudslinging Mitch' because the only thing he has to run on is destroying other people. There is nothing in the 30 year history of his voting that he is proud enough of to run on,"  said Bevin.

Kentucky's midterm is already receiving plenty of national attention.

The outcome, along with those in a handful of other hotly contested states, could alter the makeup of the U.S. Senate where Democrats currently hold 52 seats to the GOP's 46.

With so much at stake, things could get downright nasty in the Commonwealth.
