An East Texas Carter BloodCare Center says they are experiencing lower donor numbers than usual for the summer season.
With people traveling away from home during the summer months, the center says it's a time when they need blood the most.
"Across our center we need to see 1,100 donors a day, and when you deal with shortages in the summer time where you know not as many people are coming out to donate, that number gets harder and harder to reach," said Bob Mauldin, Manager of Regional Relations for Carter BloodCare in East Texas.
Although the number of donors coming in is shrinking, the need for blood is not.
"Our family motto is 'we live to give'," said Charles Long, a blood donor who has been giving for over 60 years.
Long recognizes the need we have in East Texas.
"I volunteered at Mother Frances hospital and I know how much blood they need there and so it makes me more aware of the community and how much the community needs everyday," said Long.
Carter BloodCare asks that people donate just a little bit of their time.
It typically takes less than an hour to donate and by giving the standard one pint of blood, you can save up to three lives.
Besides saving lives, there are other rewards involved with giving blood.
"We always have our rewards program for donors that come in to donate. They can earn reward points to buy things in our online store," said Mauldin. "Brookshire's is giving away a free brisket for every blood donor that donates at one of their drives this week. There are a lot of big incentives to come out and help us out in this time of need."
"If I can give them really what they need, and that's blood, that's the real thing that I would like to do," said Long.
For those who may be scared of needles, the center encourages to still give.
"If that's your fear, think about the folks in the hospital who are scared for their life," said Mauldin.
