ATHENS, TX (KLTV) - A football player at an East Texas college was taken to the hospital Wednesday after he was struck by a vehicle.

According to Athens Police Department Assistant Chief Rodney Williams III, 18-year-old Trinity Valley Community College football player Ugonna "Chris" Nwarie was walking across Lakeside Drive in a marked pedestrian crosswalk when he was hit by a truck traveling eastbound.

The 66-year-old driver failed to yield at the crosswalk and struck Nwarie, knocking him to the pavement. He was transported by ambulance to East Texas Medical Center. The football player's injuries were non life-threatening, but he did suffer a broken leg.

Nwarie, who is 6-foot-3 inches tall, graduated from Mansfield-Timberview High School in Arlington in 2013.
