Fire contained after threatening two East Texas homes
SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
Crews have now contained a fire that threatened two homes on Thursday.
According to Smith County Assistant Fire Marshal Oren Hale, a plow line has now been established around a fire that burned two acres on County Road 358 near the intersection of Interstate 20 and Highway 271 in Smith County.
One home almost had to be evacuated and the fire was nearing a second home before the Texas A&M Forest Service was able to create a perimeter. Fire fighters on scene are now letting the fire burn out and will continue to monitor it throughout the afternoon.
Winona, Red Springs, and Jackson Heights volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze. It is unknown how the fire started at this time.
Officials want to remind residents that Smith County is under a burn ban, and that those who illegally burn will now be issued a citation.
