An East Texas man was arrested on Tuesday after he robbed an elderly couple at gunpoint.
Van Zandt County Sheriff Lindsey Ray says Rodney Wayne Morris forced his way into a home on County Road 2722 armed with a shotgun. Inside, he robbed the elderly residents, threatened to kill both of them, then left.
When deputies responded, the elderly couple was able to identify Morris, who used to live in their neighborhood and do yardwork for them. The couple, who was shaken up by the incident, was also able to provide a description of the suspect's vehicle.
When officers in Mabank heard the description of the suspect, they drove to Morris' mother's house in Gun Barrel City. When they arrived, Morris came out and surrendered to Mabank police.
Sheriff Ray says the elderly man was armed when Morris entered the house, but decided not to use his weapon.
"It's always dangerous to engage these people with weapons… in not doing that it could have gotten really ugly," Ray said.
Deputies from Van Zandt County are en route to pick up Morris. He will be charged with robbery, although other charges are also possible. Morris was in custody in Van Zandt County about three weeks ago.
