An East Texas soldier stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina drowned over the weekend.
21-year-old Pvt. Jordan Miles of Longview drowned Saturday at White Lake in North Carolina. Miles was swimming near a pier around 2:30 p.m. when he reportedly went under the pier and hit his head.
Emergency crews searched for Miles for 20 minutes before the soldier was found near the end of the pier. The drowning has been ruled accidental.
"Pvt. Miles was an exceptional paratrooper and an integral member of our team. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We will never forget him," said Lt. Col. Mark Childress, Miles' battalion commander.
Miles joined the Army in October and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in June. He was a paratrooper and an intelligence analyst.
His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Parachutist Badge.
