Former Austin Peay football coach found dead

CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A former Austin Peay football coach was found dead Monday from an apparent suicide.

Authorities said Bill Schmitz was found dead in Tampa, FL, following a jump from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa, according to The Leaf-Chronicle, our news partners.

Schmitz was hired as head coach at Austin Peay in 1997 when the university began its non-scholarship era. He coached the Governors through 2002.

He also served as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt.

Recently Schmitz had coached and taught at high schools in Florida.
