A former Angelina County jailer is in jail tonight after an investigation by the Angelina County Sheriff's office and the Texas Rangers showed he abused his power.
Stevon Crowder, 53 of Lufkin, was arrested Monday night for eight counts of official oppression and five counts of civil rights violation. Two of the civil rights violations involved sexual assault by contact.
Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanches said the investigation into the allegations started May 20, 2013.
Sanches could not release any exact details of the case but did tell KTRE that the eight counts of oppression stem from sexual harassment, where Crowder abused his power by making inappropriate comments towards female prisoners.
Sanches said the civil rights charges included more severe abuse, stating Crowder touched inmates inappropriately. Sanches said rape was never committed.
The investigation involved interviews in Angelina, Henderson, Coryell and Burnett counties.
Crowder was booked into the Angelina County Jail on $24,500 bond. He was transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail for his protection.
