TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum has about 30 young desert tortoises available for adoption at no cost.
The annual summer Desert Tortoise Adoption Program (DTAP) helps people bring them home the legal way. It is illegal to take them from the desert.
Renee Lizotte is a keeper at the museum. She says it's not a good idea to put captive tortoises back in the wild. "It could spread disease to the wild tortoises." Lizotte adds all the tortoises that are part of DTAP are captive and looking for a new home.
To qualify for the adoption program, a museum volunteer will come out to your home and check if your backyard is safe raise a desert tortoise.
Desert tortoises can grow to the size of about a dinner plate and can live up to 80 years or more.
