Grapeland Student Laid To Rest

An East Texas community mourns after laying one of their own to rest. 17 year old Russell Pennington, died Wednesday morning. He was one of the Grapeland High School football players struck by lightning Tuesday night during practice.

Grapeland is in Houston County just north from Crockett. Russell and all of his teammates and coaches were taken to the hospital.

Today the community supported one another at Russell's funeral. Hundreds of people were there, all mourning the loss of a young man considered a community leader. Many watched on closed circuit TV from an overflow room. Those who knew Russell best say he is dearly missed and will be in their hearts always

"Russell was my best friend...he was a really good person a real pure person and I loved him to death and I'm gonna miss him. I think the whole town is gonna miss him. I just wanna say that wherever he's at he's in a better place right now and I'm gonna miss him," says Daniel Dameron, a friend of Russell's.

Several organizations have already approached the school about constructing a memorial to Russell on the high school football field.
