Theft suspect jailed after fight with Mesa police officers

MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A Mesa man accused of failing to pay for food he had eaten also faces potential charges of aggravated assault after he fought with two Mesa police officers Sunday.

Christian Javier Cuevas, 30, reportedly punched a female officer in the face and then punched another officer on the side of his head during a fight as they tried to take him into custody about 9:45 a.m. Sunday outside a Food City at 450 E. Southern Ave.

They eventually took Cuevas into custody and all three received minor cuts and abrasions.

Cuevas is suspected of eating food inside the store and refusing to pay for it.

Cuevas was booked into jail on two counts of aggravated assault on an officer, theft and shoplifting.

The East Texan's senior campaign though is likely over. Wilson suffered an ankle injury in the victory and will not play against Rice or in next week's Conference USA championship game.
