ETX kids find fun way to donate their shoes to children in need
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
East Texas kids are literally tumbling their shoes off and it is all for a good cause.
"It goes to Shoes for Orphan Souls and they take shoes to other countries, all over the place. These shoes will actually go in the East Texas area. We're just excited and it's neat for the kids to have opportunities to give, to know what that's about and to also help out in the community," said Marlynne Finch, organizer of Saturday's event and part-owner of Texas East Gymnastics.
Shoes for Orphan Souls is the largest humanitarian aid project of Buckner International, a global Christian ministry dedicated to serving orphans, vulnerable children and families.
Thanks to a partnership with local organizations, the shoes donated Saturday morning will go to children right here in East Texas.
"It was really cool to give back to the community because they do a lot for us," said Macy Parsley who participated in the event.
"It's really important to teach them while they're young to give back to the community that you're in and help support that are less fortunate," said Yvonne Wright whose daughter participated.
Finch said all the proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to Shoes for Orphan Souls as well. She said she is happy with Saturday's turnout and plans on making this an annual event.
"We should have probably about 50 pairs of shoes. Next year we will do it again and maybe we will have 500 pairs of shoes," she said.
