The United Way of Smith County kicked off its fundraising campaign for this year, and put a big number on the board.
Campaign organizers announced the 1.7 million dollar goal for the year on Thursday night. It's the same goal set, and met, last year.
The money will go towards services all over the county, and members say it's money that represents "Smith County folks, helping Smith County folks."
"Without the United Way, you wouldn't have the money to fund a lot of these needed programs and services that really help support those less fortunate than we are," said campaign chairman Chad Cargile. "So without these programs, you'd have a lot of folks in this community that would be without the basic things that really help them survive."
Cargile said last year, the campaign was able to raise more than the goal, even in a recession, and hope to repeat that feat this year.
