Tyler Lee fighting for respect

The Tyler Lee Red Raiders are tired of losing.

"We used to be known as the 'Beast of the East,'" said Tyler Lee lineman Antron Henry.  "We're trying to get back to that same level if not higher and a force to be reckoned with."

The Red Raiders are coming off a second straight one win season.  Tyler Lee hasn't won a district game since 2010.  The senior class is confident things will change for the better in 2013.

"Being here three years and winning three to four games is something were going to really work hard to change," said senior Amir Wilson.  "If anything it makes us hungrier."

The Red Raiders will sport black helmets in 2013.  It represents a new attitude and swagger.

"Forget just one game, we want two, we want three, we want playoff games," said Wilson.  "We know it's not going to be easy."

Despite recent struggles, Tyler Lee is ranked No. 17 in the preseason 5A rankings.  The Red Raiders aren't satisfied.

"We're trying to get that respect back," said cornerback Patrick Crowder.  "A lot of people say (John Tyler) and all this. We're trying to get our name back out there on the list. Watch out for us this year because the 'Beast of the East' is coming back."

For consecutive years the match-up between Palestine and No. 9 Van is our Red Zone Game of the Week. The Vandals and Wildcats have met in each of the past three seasons, and Van has come out on top every time. The 2016 game however, was a 3 point contest at halftime. That is before Van quarterback Garrett Moseley and company pulled away. Now a senior, Moseley and Van are off to a 3-0 start while averaging nearly 50 points per game. Palestine meanwhile is 2-1. Stephen f. Austin head football coach Clint Conque paid a visit to the Rose City this afternoon. It's perfect timing to pump up the program, considering the Jacks are coming off a dramatic last second win over Incarnate Word. Put on by the alumni association, Conque was the featured speaker at a Lumberjack networking event. Coach Conque got to brag a little about SFA's first victory of the year. Not to mention that despite a rough non-conference, the Jacks are 1-0 in South...More >>
