16 arrested in AZ crime sweep; guns, ammo, meth seized

KINGMAN, AZ (CBS5) -

A seven-month long undercover investigation netted 16 arrests and the seizures of weapons, ammunition, drugs and an improvised explosive device, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office said.

Ten suspects remain at large.

More than 60 law enforcement officers from multiple agencies fanned out across Mohave County Thursday with arrest and search warrants in hand.

"Operation Street Sweeper," a seven-month-long undercover operation, targeted people illegally selling or possessing firearms and narcotics in Mohave County.

From February to August, ATF agents in partnership with the Mohave Area General Narcotics Enforcement Team bought 78 firearms (27 of them stolen and several sawed off shotguns), 66 explosive blasting caps, several thousand rounds of ammunition and 88 grams of methamphetamine.

The probe implicated 26 suspects in crimes involving felons in possession of firearms, home invasions, armed robberies/shootings, residential burglaries, firearms/explosives trafficking, and narcotics distribution.

All of the suspects have a combined total of 66 prior felony convictions..

An improvised explosive device that was seized at the search warrant location was rendered safe by ATF.

Four other people were arrested on unrelated outstanding misdemeanor warrants.

The 16 suspects in custody are expected to be arraigned in U.S. District Court in Phoenix, AZ.

The roundup involved officers with the Kingman Police Department, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, the Bullhead City Police Department, the Lake Havasu Police Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Mohave County Attorney's Office, United States Attorney for the District of Arizona, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Marshals Service.

People with any information on the whereabouts of the outstanding fugitives are asked to call the Kingman Police Department at 928-753-2191.
