The Grant community will
remember their late police chief, Verlon Lemaster, Jr., in a candlelight vigil Thursday night.
Thursday marked the 10th
anniversary of Lemaster's murder.
On August 15th in 2003, Lemaster
and several other officers went to a home off Cathedral Caverns Highway to pick
up a runaway.
Police said Brian Butler
and Jerid Eldridge were hiding in a closet and when Lemaster went in the house,
they came out shooting.
A memorial to Lemaster is
located at City Hall. His picture hangs on the wall of grant's
Eldridge pleaded guilty in
2009 and is serving a life sentence. Butler was sentenced to life without the
possibility of parole, but is trying to get a new trial. He also will have two new
attorneys. Two months ago a judge granted his lawyer's request to be excused
from the case.
The candlelight vigil for Lemaster will be held outside the Grant Town Hall at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
