Wyatt, from Mobile, Ala., was the U.S. Amateur medalist a year ago and qualified 44th in 2013. He moves into the round of 32 on Thursday after defeating 21st-seeded Hoey.

Hoey took the early 1-up lead with a birdie on the par-3 second hole, but Wyatt quickly squared the match on the fourth hole and never trailed again. He won the seventh and eighth holes to take the 2-up lead. Hoey won the ninth hole before Wyatt won the 12th, 14th and 15th holes to close out the match.

Wyatt will play the winner of the Bo Andrews/Gavin Hall match beginning at 7:40 a.m. on Thursday.
