LeTourneau students prepare for Red Bull "Flugtag"

Posted: Updated:
LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Flugtag is nearly here, and there is a group of LeTourneau University students who are nearly ready to participate.

Some of you may not be familiar with the term 'flugtag.' It means "flight day" in German and in this case it's the name of the annual Red Bull home-made, human powered flying craft competition.

Red Bull's slogan is "Red Bull gives you wings", but in this case entrants have to make their own, which appealed to three aviation students in Longview. Nathan O'Quinn, Sheldon Bacher, and Rachael Moffat chose to make a glider based off the F-14 Tomcat, the aircraft featured in "Top Gun".

One of the competitions will be held in Dallas for the first time. Flugtag is on September 21 this year, so they have about a month to make it all work. Anyone 18 and older can enter.

They are looking for more sponsors and an enclosed trailer to transport the glider. For more information, check out their Facebook page here
