Salvation Army needs $58K to keep doors open

APACHE JUNCTION, AZ (CBS5) -

A year ago Cameron White had it all. He lived with the love of his life in the home they built together. But that all changed when his wife was diagnosed with cancer and died last spring.

"Finally the time came and I didn't plan for it. I became homeless on Sept. 3 at 10:26 in the morning," said White.

For two months White literally slept in the dirt until a local church put him in touch with the Salvation Army.

Tuesday afternoon folks in need lined up outside the office.

"Anybody who is hungry can come get a box of food. They're free. They're totally free," said Salvation Army driver Sissy Ford.

Since the Apache Junction office expanded its boundaries earlier this summer there have been a lot more mouths to feed.

Last month volunteers handed out 460 of these food boxes. That's about double what they normally do.

On top of that the organization helps pay water and electric bill for people in need. The group also takes patients to dialysis.

Without immediate food and cash donations the people who come here for help will have to go without.

"I think it would break a lot of hearts and a lot of spirit. I don't know how many people just expect this to be there but I am truly thankful for it. It's a gift," said White.
