PHOENIX (CBS5) -

While many would agree Garfield the cat was cute, the extra pounds many pets are carrying are no laughing matter.

Researchers found that more than 50 percent of pets are overweight.

The Maricopa County Animal Care and Control Center (MCACC) took in Albert, who weighs nearly 30 pounds.

Veterinarians say there are weight-related issues such as high blood pressure and osteoarthritis.

Albert is on a reduced calorie cat food and is walking more. He was moved to a bigger wing so he could exercise and play to work off those pounds.

He is up for adoption but the new family needs to make sure they keep him moving.
