PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix-area school girl is smiling again after two Phoenix police officers dug into their pockets to buy her a backpack and supplies on the first day of school.

Officer Ben Carro, a community action officer, was directing traffic at Loma Linda Elementary for their first day of school, on Monday, when he noticed a student, Leslie Gonzales, walking alone and crying.

Carro said he and a school aid, Jill Lebario, went up to the student, and discovered she was upset because her mother couldn't buy her a backpack for another two weeks.

Lebario tried to console Leslie, as the girl entered the school grounds, but the student was still upset and crying.

Carro and fellow community action officer, Jon McLachlan, took a ride to a local Target store.

There, they bought not only a backpack for the girl, but also a lunch box, water bottle, folders, pens, markers, crayons, a ruler and pencils they could give her as Leslie started the new school year.

"Leslie had come to school crying and upset, but by the middle of her first hour on that ever so important first day of school, she was smiling and enjoying a fresh start to the new school year," the officers said in a post on the Phoenix Police Department's Facebook page.
