Tyler mother remains in hospital after being hit by car while carrying infant

Posted: Updated:

The mother who was hit by a car more than two weeks ago in Tyler remains in critical condition at a local hospital on Monday evening.

20-year-old Audrey Hettinger was crossing the street with her three-week-old infant, Amelia Sabbagh, when they were struck by a car around 8:30PM on Saturday, July 27. Hettinger was holding her baby and trying to cross Old Bullard Road in Tyler when a black four-door Mercedes Benz sedan hit them.

The infant was initially taken to a Tyler hospital, and was later transferred to Children's Medical Center in Dallas. She was released last week.

The crash happened right in front of an outdoor anniversary party and barbeque for a local clothing store. Sgt. Robeson said two officers were working on an extra-duty job in a nearby parking lot and immediately responded to the scene.

Witnesses told police that Hettinger tried to cross the street at a location that did not have a crosswalk. They also said that the crash happened when it was still light out and both parties should have been able to see each other coming.

According to Hettinger's Facebook page, she currently studies engineering at UT Tyler, after graduating high school in 2012 in Seguin.
