PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's volunteer posse began patrolling Valley schools Monday afternoon.

The program kicked off at the Country Gardens Charter School at 5613 West Southern Ave. in Laveen.

The posse will provide a show of force intended to deter criminal behavior and to be in position to immediately respond to potential acts of violence, according to an MCSO news release.

Arpaio's posse, some he said are trained to carry assault rifles, will provide additional security at 62 elementary, middle and high schools with the MCSO's jurisdictions.

His directives to posse volunteers are to be watchful of any suspicious activity, including suspicious packages or people.

Posse members underwent a simulated training exercise in July at which they responded to gunshots and explosions at a local school.

The program was initiated after the school December 2012 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and six adults before taking his own life.
