Upshur county residents shaken after large fire

Posted: Updated:
UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

At least five acres of land in Gilmer are burned after giant flames took over a wooded area.   Meanwhile, another fire smoldered in Upshur county, has residents worried the dry conditions could lead to a repeat of the summer of 2011.

Around 1pm Saturday, fire crews rushed to a 5-acre blaze off highway 155 south of Gilmer that shut the highway down. Just days ago, over 100-acres torched off Flamingo road, giving area residents an uneasy feeling.

"I was worried because its so dry and with it being so hot and dry it can spread fast," says area resident Tandy McDonald.

Gilmer and other fire crews have been closely watching the burn areas to be on scene immediately if there are any re-kindles. Forest service bulldozers are regularly being called in to cut wide breaks to take dry fuel away from fires.

"Every time I see smoke I panic," says Carol Elia.

The scorched earth reminds firefighters and homeowners of the summer of 2011, something they don't want to see repeated. Many remember how their homes came within a few feet of being claimed by the fires.

"The whole state was on fire, and we were just watching to see which way it was going next and it actually got within a quarter mile of us," Elia says.

After an hour of fighting, crews contained the 155 fire at 5-acres. Residents hope they aren't talking about new fire memories after this summer.

"There was fires all around us, roads were closed down , we couldn't get certain places it was really bad," McDonald says.

The cause of the fire off of highway 155 near Gilmer is still under investigation.
