Exclusive: Police release video of car chase that ended in death of suspect

Posted: Updated:

A Longview police officer charged an oncoming car in a life or death situation that happened back in May during a wild car chase down Highway 80 in Longview.

During that chase, 28-year-old Jose Sifuentes struck one officer, and was shot trying to evade the area. A newly-released Longview Police Department dash-cam video shows hit and run suspect Jose Sifuentes driving on rims after having his tires spiked.

"He just tried to evade the situation by continuing down the road turning several times," says Longview police officer Krisite Brian.

Wildly swerving, Sifuentes dodged patrol units and oncoming traffic all around him. Then he is seen swerving and hitting officer Kerry Higginbotham.

"Sometimes you can go your whole career and not be in a situation such as this," Officer Kristie Brian says.

Sifuentes then spins and heads back towards officers, forcing Higginbotham to make a life or death split second decision. Gun drawn, Higginbotham charges at the oncoming Sifuentes, firing. Sifuentes is hit and crashes into another patrol unit. He later died at a hospital.

"Your brain just goes back and works off the training that you've done over the years to prepare for such a moment, should it ever come," says Brian.

Brian says any indecision in a life of death situation could cost lives.

"We do train for it so that if and when it ever occurs, we're ready for it and able to react quickly to be able to save our life, or other officers and citizens lives," she says.

Higginbotham suffered only minor injuries from the shooting. A grand jury later cleared him of any wrongdoing.
