The Trojans came out firing on
Wednesday night, taking a 40-12 lead into the half and never looking back, trouncing
CB Gran Canaria U20 83-33 in their fourth game of the summer.
"Tonight was by far our best team performance of the trip,"
said head coach Phil Cunningham. "The opponent was a younger team that
had plenty of size and talent, including a couple of 6'10" players. It
was good for us because this team was organized and knew what they wanted to do
on both ends of the floor, as opposed to the games in Barcelona against a
collection of semi-professional players. For a college team, we are an
older and experienced group, and it showed on the court tonight."
As a team, Troy shot 45.3 percent from the floor. The
Trojans struggled a bit from range, as it was their first game on a regulation
FIBA court, with the 3-point line more than a foot deeper than at the NCAA
Tevin Calhoun led all scorers on the day with 27 points on
10-of-17 shooting. He also led Troy with 10 rebounds. Wes Hinton
came up one rebound short of his fourth consecutive double-double, finishing
the game with 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Deonata Jethroe
had a great game shooting, hitting 5-of-9 shots from the field for 11 points.
Hunter Williams was tremendous yet again, scoring 10 points
and adding seven assists with no turnovers. Newcomer J.C. Bonny didn't
seem to mind the deeper 3-point line, hitting 2-of-3 from range and finishing
with nine points.
"Our defensive intensity was at a high level tonight," said
Cunningham. "We came out and set the tone for the game with how hard we
played on that end of the floor. We've also been really pleased with how
well the guys have shared the ball on offense.
"We've got one more game to go on this trip, and we're
looking forward to seeing how the guys choose to finish it out. We expect
them to keep playing hard and playing together just like they have done to this
The Trojans wrap up their trip to Spain with one more game
on Friday night in Gran Canaria, before returning to the States.
