HOPKINS COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
An East Texas sheriff's deputy and jailer died Tuesday following a one-vehicle accident.
According to Delta County Chief Deputy Don Willingham, 28-year-old Kevin Wingfield Jr., a deputy with the Delta County Sheriff's Department, was involved in a one-vehicle accident around 5:00 p.m. near Tira in Hopkins County, 14 miles north of Sulphur Springs.
A Texas Department of Public Safety report said that Wingfield died as a result of a medical event and not the vehicle accident. He was driving a 2008 Dodge pickup on Farm-to-Market 1536 when his truck crossed the intersection of Farm-to-Market 71 and struck a fence.
Wingfield walked 30-feet away from the accident before collapsing. An autopsy has been requested.
Wingfield leaves behind an 8-year-old son and his fiance.
Donations for Wingfield's family can be made to the Delta County Sheriff's Department. Visitation will be held at Jones-Walker Funeral Home in Commerce on Friday from 6-8 p.m. His funeral service will be Saturday morning at Cross Trails Cowboy Church in Fairlie, Texas at 11 a.m.
