On Wednesday, an East Texas man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend.

49-year-old Avery Lee Denton, of Brownsboro, was charged with murder in the death of Sandra Gail Anderson.

Anderson's family contacted the Henderson County Sheriff's Office to report her missing in July 2010. Authorities went to Denton's home on County Road 3612 as part of their search efforts and became suspicious after speaking with him. They said the circumstances of Anderson's disappearance Denton communicated to them did not add up.

A search of the property led authorities to locate Anderson's remains in a burn pile. Family members told investigators that she had only been living with Denton for a few weeks.

Denton pleaded guilty to manslaughter and to tampering with a human corpse. He described the altercation with Anderson as an apparent fight that led to her unintentional death. The condition of her remains made it difficult to determine a cause of death.
