Five days before the tuition deadline, some East Texas kids looking to go to college are no closer to knowing whether their bills will be paid.
In May, a benefactor announced free scholarships for all West Rusk students who wanted to attend East Texas Baptist University. ETBU officials say they are still waiting for the money to show.
ETBU's July 31 deadline for tuition payment is fast approaching, and some West Rusk kids are still in doubt.
"It started with them saying it was going to
happen the next day, then them saying it was the next day; they just kept
holding it off," says West Rusk graduate I'Keyia Lewis.
"Every student who comes to ETBU in the fall has to make a payment toward
fall tuition," says ETBU Public Relations Director Mike Midkiff.
In May, a Houston area benefactor offered a free scholarship ride at ETBU for any West Rusk student who wanted a college degree.
ETBU is in the same boat. "We're waiting just like everyone else for those funds to be made available," Midkiff said.
They have had no correspondence or confirmation that the scholarship money will arrive.
But for the scholarship recipients, many of whom are already packed and ready to move, this is cutting it far too close.
I'Keyia hopes to be the first doctor in her family, attending pre-med at ETBU. For many, it may be their only chance at college.
"We are hopeful that all this will fall in place in time," Midkiff said.
As of today, officials at West Rusk ISD say the matter is still being worked out.
ETBU officials say they have still had no confirmation when the money will be available.
