Gilmer's Johnson eyes 1,000 yard year

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KLTV) - Gus Johnson has a big goal in mind.

"If I could go for 1,000 in a passing/air raid offense, that would be great," said Johnson, speaking at Southland Conference media days.

The Gilmer native is talking about the 1,000 yard rushing mark.

Derrick Blaylock was the last SFA running back to eclipse the mark, back in 2000.

"We have not had a running back like him since I've been head coach at SFA," said Lumberjacks head coach JC Harper. "He has the ability to run the ball inside and outside and make people miss. We really look forward to him carrying the ball."

Johnson led SFA in rushing last year with 961 yards as a sophomore.

He posted two games of more than 200 yards, including a 226 against Northwestern State, which is the 3rd most single game rushing yards in SFA history.

He also ran for 215 against Central Arkansas.

Johnson was a 1st team all Southland Conference selection in 2012 and has been named a 2013 pre-season 1st team selection as well.

"I've put myself in a place where everyone looks at me because it has been established that I make plays for the team," said Johnson. "Everyone is going to be looking up to me, so I have to deliver and be the leader they are looking for."

SFA has been picked 4th in the pre-season Southland polls, after finishing 5-6 last year.

"It is up to us to determine where we are going to go," said Johnson. "We are excited to play and to go out and get some wins."

SFA opens the year on August 31st on the road at Weber State.
