Tyler police believe assault suspect is victim of suicide

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Tyler police tell that it appears the victim of an apparent suicide on Wednesday night is the same man who was sought in an assault case from earlier in the day.

Tyler police officer Don Martin said that a man physically assaulted his wife on Chandler Highway earlier in the day on Wednesday. She was taken to a local hospital with her injuries.

Tyler police spent the afternoon looking for the man, and even obtained a warrant for family violence, but they were unable to locate him.

Wednesday night, Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said a man is believed to have shot and killed himself at Memorial Cemetery on Highway 64 outside of Tyler.

Officer Martin says police believe the suicide victim, and their assault suspect, to be the same person.

An autopsy on the body should be finished by early afternoon on Thursday. The identification of the suicide victim should be released at that time.
