4-month-old Riley Tyson was found lifeless in his playpen in his mother's Southwood Apartments home in Sibley.
MINDEN, LA (KSLA) -
A Sibley mother is now charged with first degree murder in the death of her 4-month-old son.
19-year-old Brittany Tyson made her first appearance in court on Monday, where she was advised of the charges against her and given the opportunity to tell the court whether she intended to hire an attorney, represent herself or require a court-appointed attorney.
According to her booking report, deputies were called to Tyson's Southwood Apartments home just before 8 p.m. on Friday. They arrived to find 4-month-old Riley Tyson lifeless in his playpen.
Investigators say Tyson gave conflicting statements to deputies about what led up to Riley's death, but admitted that the child would not stop crying and screaming and started and that she had shaken the infant "very hard." Investigators say Tyson told them the baby's head rocked back and forth "3 or 4 times," and that the baby quit crying and screaming and started to wimper and close his eyes.
Tyson says she placed the baby into the playpen around 4:30 that afternoon and did not check again around 7:30 p.m. and discovered he was not breathing.
Webster Sheriff Gary Sexton told KSLA News 12 on Saturday that the baby's body had been taken to Little Rock for an autopsy, which showed that he died of suffocation after being placed face-down on a blanket.
Tyson is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and of drug paraphernalia, because investigators say they found an unfinished marijuana cigarette underneath the child's playpen and other paraphernalia around the home.
Three others inside the apartment at the time are also facing marijuana and paraphernalia charges: Lauren Lewis, Megan Lewis and Kayla Ensminger. No ages were given.
Brittany Tyson was already out on bail on a charge of cruelty to a juvenile for allegedly burning the same child on the leg. Now, she remains in custody, held on $1 million bond.
