Tyler Rose Festival draws nearer

Preparations for the 80th Annual Texas Rose Festival are in full swing.

The Rose Festival Association held an event Friday night to officially kick off the celebrations.
This year's Rose Queen is Rachel Vanderpool Clyde.

The festival takes place in October, and features the queen's coronation, a parade, and the queen's tea. The festival has always been a big tourist draw for the city of Tyler.

"The Rose Festival is bigger and better than ever," said 2013 Festival President Randy Grooms. "We bring in hundreds of families from out of town, and hundreds of families in town participate. It has a huge impact on our economy, and it really puts Tyler on the map across the state as well as across the nation."

This year's theme is "Raindrops and Roses, and Other Favorite Things."
