The largest collection of shark rays on exhibit grew on Wednesday, with the addition of an adult female shark ray joining the four others already on display at Newport Aquarium.
She joins Sweat Pea, Scooter, Spike and Sunshine in the 385,000-gallon shark tank.
Aquarium officials say the new arrival does not have a name yet, so they are asking fans and friends to help pick one for her through a poll on the Newport Aquarium's Facebook page.
Currently, the choices are Sparkle, Shimmer, Sugar and Summer.
According to the Aquarium, the new shark ray was born in the waters off Taiwan. She is more than seven feet long and weighs about 250 pounds. She will also be part of our Shark Ray breeding program – the only one in the world.
"It's great to have another female in the Shark Ray breeding program, said Mark Dvornak, curator of fish and invertebrates at Newport Aquarium. "We now have a better chance of breeding this amazing species and more opportunities to further learn about them."
