Former middle school coach pleads guilty in sex case

FALMOUTH, KY (FOX19) -

A former coach who was facing sex charges has pleaded guilty to one count of custodial interference with a minor.

Cassie Elfers was the part-time volleyball coach at Sharp Middle School in Pendleton County. She was charged in January with one count of sexual abuse. Two additional charges of of sexual abuse and a charge of distribution of obscene matter were added in March. 

The case involved a student on the boys basketball team, which was coached by her ex-boyfriend.

As part of the plea, she will not face sex offender status and faces up to one year in prison and will be allowed to argue probation.

Her attorney, Eric Deters, said there was no sexual intercourse and sexual contact once. "Fair resolution to this case based on facts and law," said Deters.

Elfers was scheduled to go on trial on Thursday.

She faces sentencing on Sept. 2.
