Group wants to build drive-in movie theater in Murfreesboro

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A nostalgic form of entertainment could be making a big comeback in Rutherford County, as a developer wants to bring a drive-in movie theater to a piece of land that is already full of history.

But the plans are already drawing some concerns from neighbors.

"We're hoping, actually, it will be the largest single-screen drive-in theater in the United States," said Ted Goodman, attorney for the developers.

The proposed site at the corner of Old Nashville Highway and Florence Road sits on 28 acres now covered by trees. And the plan calls for reusing buildings that were once part of Nashville's original airport.

"We're going to have an indoor movie theater as well. There's going to be play structures for children," Goodman said. "It's going to be a real, good family thing. There will be more to do than just seeing the movie."

The developer is Black Eagle Holding, owned by a Rutherford County family. They say the project would create plenty of jobs along with family fun, including an arcade.

However, neighbors already have concerns - mainly the traffic that the theater would bring. The developer says moving the entrance to Florence Road would help.

"It's a three-lane road. It is well suited to handle traffic from this. And also the ticket booths are going to be 40 to 80 cars deep into the property," Goodman said.

The movie screen will also be deep in the trees so drivers and homeowners won't be distracted.

"There's not going to be stadium speakers blaring sound out into the community. It's going to be FM to people's cars," Goodman said.

Developers are asking for input from the community at the Board of Zoning Appeals hearing Aug. 14 and through the Murfreesboro Drive-In Facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/TheMurfreesboroDriveIn.
