NKU students build app that shows OTR wait times

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Northern Kentucky University students have developed a new mobile app to help restaurant goers in Over the Rhine (OTR).

The app tells you how long you'll have to wait to get a bite to eat at OTR restaurants. "OTR Line" is available on the Google Play store for android and through iTunes for iPhone users, best of all, it's free.

This crowd-sourcing app relies on users who visit restaurants in OTR to post their wait times at restaurants. Then all other app users can view wait times in establishments across the neighborhood.

The Center For Applied Informatics (CAI) at NKU, is a program with about 100 students that is meant to bridge the academics and the business world.

NKU has its students partnering with businesses to work on innovative projects in Canada, Switzerland, and the U.S. About 35% of the work done at the CAI is for entrepreneurs and startup organizations.

Tim Ferguson, the Chief Information Officer at NKU explained that getting students into real world work situations is a necessary part of the academic process.

"Experiential learning for an undergraduate student is critical in preparing the student for a digital economy that is very competitive," Ferguson said.

The app was designed by students from the University of Kentucky under the name, NCIT, it was last updated on July 1.

So far that app has been downloaded by 100 to 500 users, according to Google play store.
