ETBU, benefactor working to clear up scholarship issue for West Rusk ISD students

Posted: Updated:
NEW LONDON, TX (KLTV) -

Though there were fears by some West Rusk Independent School District parents and students, students from West Rusk ISD who were planning to attend East Texas Baptist University in Marshall on a full scholarship from a benefactor were given some encouraging news as the university and the benefactor, Nicholas Sturghill, are scheduled to meet in the next ten days.

On Friday, West Rusk superintendent Tommy Alexander says the situation will be resolved when both sides meet to clear up funding in the next ten days.

Alexander explained the confusion came from an invoice parents and students received from ETBU showing their tuition balance. He said the invoice is a standard practice by universities to show families what the semester will cost their student.

In a meeting Thursday night, parents were told by a representative of ETBU that the deadline for payment of tuition is July 31.

The total cost for all 14 West Rusk students who have been approved by the university is around two million dollars. There are an additional four students who may be approved.

In May, a group announced that a fund had been set up to provide a full ride to any student to attend ETBU.
