SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A Tyler man appeared in federal court today for a hearing regarding his involvement in dog fighting.

Vertrick Jordan had a pit set up on his property for dog fighting, the government alleges, and two men who were previously charged with buying, selling, delivering or transporting animals forparticipation in an animal fighting venture traveled from Kansas City to participate in a "two dog card" with a grand championship on Jordan's property.

According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom, Pete Davis, Jr., 38 and Melvin Robinson, 41, both of Kansas City, were charged with one count of buying, selling, delivering or transporting animals for participation in an animal fighting venture, run by Jordan.

Jordan appeared in the federal court today wearing a black t-shirt with the word "Boss" emblazoned across the front, and he admitted that he was the same person wanted in Kansas wanted for the dog fighting charges.

The government alleges that Jordan, along with Melvin Robinson and Pete Davis, Jr.:

  • Operated illegalgambling / bookkeeping ventures related to the dog fighting
  • Denied fightingdogs proper medical care for fighting
  • Destroyedsome injured and disabled dogs

U.S. attorneys in Texas and Kansas moved to not detain Jordan. He can apply for a "Rule 20," which would move to dispose his case in East Teas, but he would need to plead guilty. Otherwise, he must report to the federal courthouse in Kansas City, Kansas on July 18, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. before Judge O'Hara.
