Gilmer native Gus Johnson receives more preseason attention

Stephen F. Austin junior running back Gus Johnson has been named to the 2013 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) All-Purpose Award Watch List CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith announced late Sunday evening. Johnson was also named to the CFPA's Running Back Award Watch List in May.

"Congratulations to Gus Johnson on earning a spot on the CFPA Watch List," said CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. "Johnson is a dynamic all-purpose threat and one of the nation's top players to watch in 2013."

"Gus brings a lot to the offense," said head coach J.C. Harper. "He can run the ball inside, he can catch the ball out of the backfield and because of his strength he is a very good pass blocker. In addition to that, his strength allows him to pick up positive yards after the catch."

Johnson is one of 30 FCS players named to the preseason watch list. He is the lone Southland Conference player represented on the list.

A 2013 first-team All-Southland Conference selection, Johnson put together his best season in a purple and white uniform last year. The Gilmer, Texas native, averaged just under 100 yards rushing per contest, finishing second in the league with 14 touchdowns. He also averaged better than six yards per carry as a sophomore.

Johnson first received national attention when he sloshed through the rain for 215 yards and four touchdowns on 32 carries in a victory over nationally ranked Central Arkansas. He earned national player of the week honors for his performance, but that was just a prelude for the season finale. Johnson closed out the 2012 campaign by recording one of the best games by a running back in Lumberjack history.

Johnson helped guide the 'Jacks to their fourth-straight win over Northwestern State by rushing for 226 yards. The 226-yard performance was the third-best single-game outing in program history.
