Crews inspect lines around central Toledo sinkhole

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

On Monday, AT&T and Columbia Gas crews inspected gas and telephone lines on Detroit Avenue near Bancroft Street in central Toledo after a massive sinkhole opened last week.

The sinkhole opened Wednesday afternoon and swallowed a woman's car. Crews were able to rescue her and she received only minor injuries.

On Thursday, it was determined a broken cross-over sewer line that connected two other lines caused the pavement to collapse. That line has been removed, but the other two lines are being examined to see if they have additional issues.

On Friday morning, the northbound lanes of Detroit Avenue reopened. Over the weekend, crews cleaned the area and monitored the flow of the repaired sewer lines.

On Monday, utility crews were finishing the repairs to a 6-inch water line before the rest of the sinkhole gets back-filled with controlled density fill, a material to help stabilize the ground underneath where the new pavement will be laid.

Toledo's Public Utilities director, Dave Welch, says that section of Detroit Avenue should reopen Wednesday - weather permitting.

"We'll have a private contractor out tomorrow to do the final restoration of the pavement, so we should have it reopen in a day or so, depending on the weather and any unforeseen issues," said Welch.

Welch says the city will also be scoping the two sewer lines running under Detroit Avenue to look for any other potential problems.

A perimeter barrier continues to be in effect for the safety and security of the public and citizens are asked not to cross the barrier or interfere with the repair operations.
