Longview hosts kid's hotdog eating contest

Posted: Updated:

At celebrations in Longview, kids got their chance to gobble down some hot dogs for prizes.

It was the kid's hot dog eating contest at Longview's Independence Day freedom celebration.

Music at Maude Cobb activity center, and rides at the fairgrounds, were a prelim to the much anticipated kid's hot dog eating contest.

"Lots of activities here for kids and the family members. They're doing a hot dog eating contest with kids," says Longview city public information officer Shawn Hara.

"For me it's mostly about the fireworks, just celebrating the Fourth of July, the hot dog eating contest, I just want to win some money," says 8-year-old contestant Ethan Phillips.

A throwback to simpler times, the competitors ranged in age from four to 11 years old.

The objective-to down two hot dogs, including their buns, as fast as possible.

"The kids only have to eat each two hot dogs, but it's as fast as they can chow them down," Hara says.

The winning time was 1 minute and 15 seconds.

"Celebrating freedom and that's what we're doing, celebrating America," says Hara.

The celebration continues tonight with the city's fireworks display at the Longview Fairgrounds beginning at 9:30 p.m.
