LORAIN, OH (WOIO) -

A neighborhood on Lorain's west side was cordoned off and people were evacuated after  a resident found explosives in his back yard.

This started around 10 a.m. Wednesday morning after Doug Mika, who lives on West 23rd Street in Lorain called police with his discovery.

"I found maybe a hundred sticks of dynamite."

His friends encouraged him to call police.

When police arrived on scene Wednesday, they were shocked!

It was a powder keg waiting to blow, made more dangerous with the passage of time.

The dynamite was several decades old and if it had blown up, it could have apparently leveled several houses.

"As it gets older it becomes more apt to explode on its own," explains Lorain Police Captain Thomas Mize.

Folks like Ray Tomaszewski had no idea they were living next door to a ticking time bomb.

"Yeah it's scary to think about that right now it is also scary to think about all the fireworks going off last night."

At least 15 homes were evacuated. Doug Mika found the dynamite buried in his back yard after he removed some old property.

"One theory is the dynamite was used for stump removal back in the 1960s, so this neighborhood could have literally been sitting on a powder keg for more than 50 years."

The bomb squad used a robot to place the dynamite in the street where it was destroyed by burning it with diesel fuel - slowly and thoroughly.
